Rana is a 36-year-old man who has spent half his life studying and working in Australia. In 2018 he was detained by Immigration for a visa breach. He has applied for a Protection visa as he has converted to Christianity and if he returned to Bangladesh there would be real risks to his life.
Rana has used his time volunteering for St Vincent de Paul and other charitable organisations providing food for the needy; visiting refuges and helping people. He has many skills, especially in the trades area, having worked for more than five years with an electrical company. He was enrolled to complete his electrical trade before he was detained.
The Government skills and jobs summit has identified the shortages in the area that Rana has skills. It makes no sense to prevent him studying and working when allowing him to do so would alleviate the shortage of skills and save the Government (and taxpayers) the cost of the Status Resolution Support Payment he receives.
